For this project, we were given a description of a crime scene. We were given a list of suspects, and descriptions of the victim and the suspects, including their family history, hair samples, and DNA samples. We had to figure out what motives the suspects had, and present to a jury who we think murdered Carelton Comet.
Concepts
Pedigree Chart: a family tree specifically made to follow a certain disease through family members.
DNA Fingerprinting: A technique used to find a match between a suspects' DNA, and the DNA found at the crime scene.
Blood-Typing: Using anti-serums to find out what type the blood is.
Chromatography: The separation of a mixture by passing it through a solution
Gel Electrophoresis: Inserting DNA samples, and a dye, into an agarose gel and charging the gel with electricity. The DNA moves to the positively charged side since it is negatively chrged. The DNA is then displayed in size and color based on how it moves through the gel, allowing us to differentiate the DNA samples of the victims with those found at the crime scene.
Genotype: Genetic makeup of an organism
Phenotype: Physical characteristics of an organism
Karyotype: Arrangement of one's chromosomes

Reflection
I really enjoyed this project. I loved learning about karyotypes and the different diseases you can get from odd amounts of chromosomes. I thought the gel electrophoresis was very interesting. I didn't do as much as work as I had hoped to do this project, but it was a huge improvement from the last project. I still need to work on my leadership and my work ethic, because I was just told what to do and I would do it without second thought, but I only came up with a few new ideas for my group. I was distracted sometimes, because one of my best friends was in my group, which caused me to let myself get off task a lot. Next project I am going to stop letting myself get off task, and I will take a huge leadership role.
