For this project, we were told to make a concept of a design using biotechnology to save the world. We had to go through many steps in order to do this. First, we had to identify problems and issues of the world that we could solve using biotechnology. My group, Beau McAndrew, Jake Rubey, and I chose lack of water, world hunger, and a lack of clean energy. We then had to research our problems. The third step was to create solutions for our problems. Lastly, we would create a slideshow and/or design a prototype for our project.
Concepts
Biotechnology: the exploitation of biological processes for industrial and other purposes
Energy: power derived from the utilization of physical or chemical resources, especially to provide light and heat or to work machines
Electricity: a form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles (such as electrons or protons), either statically as an accumulation of charge or dynamically as a current
Lever: a rigid bar resting on a pivot, used to help move a heavy or firmly fixed load with one end when pressure is applied to the other
Cellular Respiration: a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and then release waste products

Reflection
This was my favorite project out of my first 2 years in STEM. I was partnered with 2 great friends of mine, and against all odds, we worked very well together. I worked a lot on this project. I have worked extremely hard on this project since we started it. I believe that this is the most time and effort I have put into a project in high school, because I greatly enjoyed it and I had a great time working with my friends. We encountered some hardships along the way, especially in the beginning. For example, we thought we had a great idea for this project which was designing a buoy and capturing the energy of the ocean from the waves and currents. Although, this idea does not include any biology aspects, so it is not considered biotechnology. This set us back far, but we ended up coming up with a much better idea that we love much more- a shoe that can harness the energy from walking.
